Autodiva – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) officially inaugurated the battery factory electric car first in Indonesia on Wednesday (3/7/2024). Factory operated by Hyundai LG Indonesia (HLI) Green Power is located in Karawang New Industry City (KNIC), West Java. This step is a historical milestone for the national electric vehicle industry, signifies Indonesia's vision to play an important role in the global supply chain for electric vehicles.
“With the construction of this EV battery cell factory, we will play a key role in the global supply chain for electric vehicles,” said President Jokowi when inaugurating the Inauguration of the South Korean Battery and Electric Vehicle Ecosystem in Indonesia, Karawang, West Java.
Indonesia, which previously was only an exporter of raw materials, now has the largest EV battery cell factory in Southeast Asia. This shows Indonesia's great potential in the electric vehicle industry in the Southeast Asia region. Integration of the electric vehicle industry from upstream to downstream has been realized, includes mines, nickel processing, bauxite production, smelter, cathode, precursor, to the production of electric car battery cells and the assembly of the cars themselves.
“I really appreciate the investment of Rp 20 trillion for the Hyundai car factory and a commitment of IDR 160 trillion which will be realized in stages,” he added.
Minister of Investment/Investment Coordinating Board Bahlil Lahadalia also highlighted the importance of Hyundai's investment in Indonesia, which reaches approx 11-12 billion US dollars. Of this amount, 9,8 billion US dollars allocated for electric vehicle battery processing facilities, with funds related battery cells reach 3,2 billion US dollars. “Today is a milestone where we witness the inauguration of an integrated car battery factory,” Bahlil said.
