In June 2025, BYD scored sales of more than 8.000 vehicle units in Australia, making it the first time it has entered the top five best-selling car brands in the country. This achievement was driven by the launch of new models such as the Shark 6, Sealion 6 PHEV, Dan Sealion 7 EV.
According to reports from Drive on 4 July 2025, BYD managed to sell 8.156 vehicle units during June. This figure places BYD in fifth position, is under Toyota, Ford, Mazda, and Hyundai, but surpasses Kia, GWM, and Mitsubishi.
The mid-sized SUV and 4WD pickup segments are known to dominate the Australian automotive market, and BYD strategically entered the segment. Flagship models targeting this category have proven to drive sales spikes.
Since its introduction in Australia by distributor EVDirect in 2022 melalui Act 3, BYD consistently adds to its product range. They brought Dolphin and Seal on 2023, Sealion 6 on 2024, and Sharks 6 as well as Sealion 7 Of 2025.
Start 1 July 2025, BYD officially takes over distribution operations in Australia. They also plan to launch two new models, i.e. Atto 2 (Electric SUV) Dan Sealion 8 (Seven-seater plug-in hybrid SUV), soon.
BYD's best-selling model in June was the Shark pickup 6 with 2.993 unit sold, contributed to the total 10.424 units all year round. Followed by Sealion 7 as much as 1.795 unit, Sealion 6 as much as 1.604 unit, then Seal, Act 3, and Dolphin.
BYD's total sales in Australia throughout 2025 has reached 23.355 unit. This figure makes BYD ahead of big brands like Isuzu, MG, Nissan, Subaru, Volkswagen, and Tesla.
With the proceeds from these sales, BYD is expected to exceed delivery targets by more than 40.000 vehicles in Australia in 2025. This also indicates that their sales performance in the first half of this year has exceeded the total sales for the year 2024.
