Jakarta, Otodiva – Passenger vehicle trends continue to move dynamically. Amidst the dominance of SUVs and crossovers in the global market, The wagon segment, which was once considered outdated, is now starting to gain ground again. Several manufacturers are starting to bring back station wagon models with a more modern approach, both in terms of design and technology. One of them is Mercedes-Benz.
Through its performance division, AMG, Mercedes is preparing the latest version of the CLA Shooting Brake in high-performance electric car format. Although it hasn't been officially announced yet, A number of test photos in Europe show that the CLA AMG EQ prototype has entered an advanced stage of development. Interesting, not just an aggressive look, Its performance is also predicted to be ready to challenge new standards.
This car is expected to carry power reaching 550 horsepower with a dual motor configuration at the front and rear. This figure is higher than compact rivals such as the BMW M2 CS or Audi RS 3. However, Mercedes is still holding back from confirming technical specifications publicly, while continuing to test his skills on the legendary Nürburgring circuit.

Performance Indication Through Circuit Tests, Out, and Active Spoiler

These circulating photos show interesting conditions: the car tires looked worn, even though according to testing sources, the car only devoured a few fast laps at the Nürburgring. The sidewall of the tire also shows signs of heavy pressure, which indicates two things—possibly the vehicle's considerable weight, or the traction control system is still not optimal in managing power in low traction conditions.

This is understandable, considering that the CLA AMG EQ was developed as an electric car which generally has a higher weight due to the battery pack. Besides that, This prototype uses an adaptive rear spoiler mounted above the tailgate. This feature is predicted to be operated manually, allowing owners to “show off” while the car is parked is similar to the approach Porsche takes on some of its models.
The front and rear wheels look different, something common to prototypes. However, the front wheel design looks typical of AMG electric vehicles, with a more aerodynamic flat edge profile. This combination emphasizes that Mercedes-AMG is targeting a combination of futuristic aesthetics and typical AMG performance.
Long Reach, Drifting Feature, and Targeted Market

Although this car focuses on performance, its electric range is estimated to be penetrating 430 mil (around 690 km) in one charge. This can be achieved by turning off the front motor at cruising speed, an efficiency strategy that is now starting to be implemented in many AWD electric cars. But, for AMG owners, efficiency may not be the main attraction—features like drift mode are more to look forward to.
Allegations about drifting ability are not without basis. Previous AMG models such as the CLA 45 and A 45 it's already known for a feature that lets drivers play around with traction control. If this feature returns to the CLA AMG EQ, then this could be one of the few EVs that still offers a visceral driving experience amidst the electrification trend.
However, it is not clear whether the Shooting Brake version of the CLA AMG EQ will be sold globally, including in the United States market. The reason, The non-AMG CLA Shooting Brake variant was previously introduced in Europe after the launch of the sedan version last March. Americans are known to be less familiar with the wagon shape, so this performance version may only be available in certain markets such as Europe and Japan.
The return of the wagon in high-performance electric format marks a new direction in the automotive world. The Mercedes-AMG CLA Shooting Brake isn't just about design nostalgia, but also a serious experiment in what a sport EV can achieve in the premium compact segment.
But the question remains open: is it a wagon?, even though it is supported by fierce performance and advanced technology, will really be accepted again by consumers amidst the dominance of SUVs? Mercedes seems ready to take the risk, and if it works, It could be that we will see the revival of a segment that was previously considered dormant.
