OTODIVA — Pertamina Foundation, lewat Blue Carbon Initiative (BCI) won the Environment Initiative of the Year award in the Marketing Excellence Award competition 2023 organized by Marketeers.
Known, BCI is PT Pertamina's commitment (Persero) to realize the Sustainable Development Goals (TPB), one of them is through the nature based solution program or nature-based solutions. This program has three main focuses, namely the Climate Act., community development, and biodiversity protection which is implemented through five projects, including the Blora Project, Mahakam Project, Bontang Project, Lembata Project, and Cenderawasih Project.
This award was given to the Pertamina Foundation because it was considered capable of implementing the Marketing concept 3.0, namely the implementation of sustainable marketing which has an impact on strengthening the economy, community empowerment, and environmental preservation.
The Climate Act is an effort to manage climate change through conservation and restoration of coastal ecosystems, sea, and the forest is the main focus. This program aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by utilizing the capabilities of forest ecosystems. Until the end of the year 2022, has been embedded 1.043.147 mangrove trees at the Mahakam and Bontang Project locations, as well as 461.043 carbon absorbing land trees at the Blora Project location. The planted trees have been registered in the National Registry System of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry.

Then community development is an effort to involve and empower local communities so that they are involved in handling climate change. In the Blora Project area, the people of Bodeh Village and Ngrawoh Village were involved in planting trees and training in making nutritious food, like banana jam, banana chips, and sweet corn porridge to the posyandu mothers there. Besides that, they are also taught how to make appropriate and attractive packaging for mass sale. Lonely, Free nutritional checks for children and mothers are also held to prevent stunting.

The majority of people in the two villages work as farmers and livestock breeders, so in collaboration with the UGM Faculty of Animal Husbandry, animal feed training was held. This training was carried out to provide insight that corn cob waste can be used as animal feed rather than being thrown away and burned. To support their livelihood, installed solar panels belonging to Pertamina Foundation's PFsains program competition 2022.
Moving to Kalimantan, The Bontang and Mahakam Projects involve the community in mangrove rehabilitation and restoration. Besides that, Solar-powered lights and water reservoirs have also been installed in public spaces in the Sepatin Village area, Kutai Kartanegara, East Kalimantan. Plus the activation of hydroponic plant cultivation training 4×6 meters to mothers so they can serve nutritious food.

The third focus is biodiversity protection as an effort to protect and maintain coastal ecosystems, sea, and forests and the biodiversity within them. This effort is carried out by collecting detailed data through geotagging and monitoring rare fauna.
In Blora Project area, in collaboration with the Faculty of Forestry UGM, Pertamina Foundation created an ex situ conservation hatchery and is now filled with 10 tail of the Timor deer species. Then in the Bontang and Mahakam Project areas, periodic monitoring of endemic fauna with protected status is carried out, like proboscis monkeys, small-clawed otter, and long-tailed monkeys.
President Director of Pertamina Foundation Agus Mashud S. Asngari said that in the future there will be more and more varied forms of implementation for these three main focuses. “Focus on climate act, We will develop new renewable energy through the replication of Pertamina's Berdikari Energy Village to the villages in our project area. Then, to focus on community development, we are exploring volunteer activities, where later the community will be involved in promoting their village and we will also develop the potential of their region through MSMEs. The most interesting thing is that we will be geotagging the whale shark as an effort to maintain its existence because it also acts as a carbon sink,”.
Agus presented this award to stakeholders and the community who contributed to the BCI program. “Thank you to Pertamina Group, startup, to universities and practitioners who join us in realizing a longer life for the earth. Tackling climate change cannot be done alone but requires joint commitment and action. We are open to collaborative space in running 6 SDGs priorities include the Goals 12, Responsible Consumption and Production; Objective 13, Handling Climate Change; Objective 14, Marine Ecosystem; Objective 15, Land Ecosystem; Objective 7, Clean and Affordable Energy; and Goals 8, Decent Work and Economic Growth,” he concluded.
